University of South Carolina

Rehabilitation Counseling Program

Computer Policy

Beginning with the Fall, 1999 semester, all students admitted to the Program are required to have their own personal computer and Internet service provider (ISP) before they begin classes. Be aware that America OnLine (aol) users are currently experiencing many problems when attempting to access and use the Program's Internet education sites.  It is highly recommended that students subscribe to one of the alternative providers in South Carolina when possible.  Some free ISPs are available in metropolitan areas, such as bluelight, which is available from K-Mart.

With regard to computer literacy, students must be comfortable using a major word processing program, such as Microsoft Word and WordPerfect.  Additionally, they should be proficient using e-mail and Internet search engines, such as Alta Vista, Hotbot, and Northernlight.   Being able to install/uninstall and download software is increasingly becoming necessary to participate in the Program's distance education activities.

The Program does not endorse any specific equipment or software. However, it is recommended that computers have at least a 300 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM, 5 Gb of hard drive space, a CD-drive, and USB ports.  A printer is also necessary.  The Program is implementing a number of courses in an Internet-based distance education format which require computers that have a Soundblaster compatible sound card and are capable of supporting a computer video camera, such as Quickcam and the Intel Create and Share Camera Pack.  Be wary of computers with non-Pentium processor chips.  They may not be capable of supporting sophisticated audio and video hardware and software.  New and improved hardware and software are rapidly becoming available, which is why no specific recommendations can be made.

For your information, the Program faculty and technical support personnel have no familiarity with Apple Mac computers and software.  Additionally, faculty currently use the Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers, and can provide assistance to users.

If you have specific questions about the computer hardware and software requirements, call John Holcomb at (803) 434-4296 or e-mail him at jholcomb@gw.mp.sc.edu.
